As California continues to experience a severe drought, all five of Martin Resorts locations are promoting long term water conservation plans. These programs are aimed at reducing water usage and have been in effect since Spring 2014.
Our collection of premier hotels including three hotels in Pismo Beach, the Pismo Lighthouse Suites, BEST WESTERN PLUS Shore Cliff Lodge, and BEST WESTERN PLUS Shelter Cove Lodge, one hotel in Avila Beach, the Avila Lighthouse Suites and one hotel and restaurant in Paso Robles, the Paso Robles Inn and Steakhouse have all implemented the following:
- Made the switch from glassware to recyclable paper products to reduce dish-washing. Glassware now available upon request.
- The Project Planet linen program, where we change the sheets every 3rd day and replace towels left on the floor, unless otherwise requested.
- Updated landscaping with drought tolerant plants and new irrigation systems.
- Installed water efficient toilets, shower heads and faucets.
- New single cup coffee pots to eliminate waste of water (extra coffee made, washing etc)
- Guest are asked if they want water in the restaurant. Waters are not automatically served.
We invite guests to join us by following these conservation efforts with the hopes to effectively reduce the amount of water consumption.

This years Coastal Cleanup Day was Saturday, September 20th from 9AM-12PM. The California Coastal Commission, local non profit groups like the Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo, and volunteers came together at various locations on California’s coast to remove trash and marine debris from the coastline. Four Martin Resorts locations participated in this year’s statewide event at the Avila Beach and Pismo Beach locations including Avila Lighthouse Suites, Pismo Lighthouse Suites, BEST WESTERN PLUS Shelter Cove in Pismo Beach, and BEST WESTERN PLUS Shore Cliff in Pismo Beach.
After the clean up, each location reports back to the California Coastal Commission who complies the data to influence policy. Along with the data comes some interesting facts – this years Coastal Clean Up facts include:
- 1,129 total volunteers
- 3685.2 pounds of trash and recyclables collected
- 56.25 miles of coastline and waterways cleaned
Along with these facts, here are some unusual items the volunteers found in some of our beaches:
- Toy fake teeth
- Enclosed cash register drawer
- Nosehair clippers
- Boat seat
- Wallet with library card
Come join Martin Resorts next year. We can’t wait to see even more volunteers and look forward to keeping our beaches clean!

The Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County is working to transform a 900-acre private ranch above Pismo Beach into a public preserve for outdoor recreation and community enjoyment.
Opening to the public in fall 2015, the Pismo Preserve offers truly exceptional and diverse recreational opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors will enjoy over 10 miles of existing ranch roads and trails offering ready-to-use routes ideal for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. The Land Conservancy is currently working with the Wallace Group to design, engineer, and permit two staging areas/parking lots, restroom facilities, picnic areas, and ADA-compliant site features.
Not only does the Pismo Preserve offer ample recreational activities but it allows The Land Conservancy to protect and enhance natural resources through conservation and restoration efforts which ensures refuge for sensitive species far into the future. Some sensitive species identified on the preserve are the federally threatened South-Central California Coast Steelhead and the federally endangered California red-legged frog.
Martin Resorts is a proud donator for the Pismo Preserve and looks forward to enjoying the public perserve for outdoor recreation. To make a donation or to learn more about the Pismo Preserve, visit LCSLO.org/pismopreserve.
