Be a Part of History at the Paso Robles Inn

Couples looking to get married this fall have a BIG decision to make:  Go the traditional route or get married with 124 other couples.  On Sunday, September 14th, 2014, the Paso Robles Inn will be turned into a wedding celebration of gigantic proportions when 125 couples receive their vows – or renew their vows – as a part of the ongoing celebration of the 125th anniversary of the City of Paso Robles.

“Numerous weddings have taken place at the Inn over the years, but this time we thought we’d make it into a big group ceremony,” said Noreen Martin, president and CEO of Martin Resorts which owns and manages the Paso Robles Inn.    “And this is the real thing as long as each couple gets their marriage certificate completed ahead of time.”

Paso Robles Inn 125th Wedding Event

The wedding will be held in the expansive gardens at the Inn beginning outside the Grand Ballroom where a group photo will be shot.  Then the processional winds through the gardens, over the bridge, and along the pathway.  The couples will be read their vows by Rev. Georgia Collins, from Ceremonies Your Way, and then individually pronounced.  Next a photographer will be on hand to take photos of each couple.  There will also be a guest book, and a time capsule for the couples to add their individual mementos.   Each couple will receive commemorative champagne glass, along with a champagne toast and cake.  The ballroom will be set up with a lavish buffet so that the couples can invite family and friends to eat, drink, and be merry after the ceremony.

Flowers By Kim and John Patrick Images have donated their services to make the wedding beautiful and affordable for guests.   The cost for the wedding ceremony alone is $50 per couple.  The buffet afterward is $35 per person.  Reservations for the ceremony, buffet, and hotel rooms can be made by calling the Paso Robles Inn at (805)238-2660.  For more information visit http://www.pasoroblesinn.com/125Anniversary.

Welcoming the Summer with Wine and Tapas

Yesterday, Paso Robles Inn enjoyed the first evening of our Summer Wine and Tapas series. We were joined by DAOU Vineyards to create a memorable night.  Guests enjoyed delicious food created by Executive Chef Paul to compliment DAOU Vineyards’  four featured wines. One of the many delicious tapas included whipped gorgonzola, honey, granny smith apples, and almonds, all on top of toast. Chef Paul cooked in the middle of the patio so all the guests could watch him work his magic!

Guests sipped on wine while lounging in the warm weather to the sound of live acoustic music. The Paso Robles Inn and Steakhouse food and beverage staff enthusiastically served freshly cooked tapas to guests who were sitting and socializing. Laughter filled the air while the guests enjoyed some great company as they relaxed surrounded by the beautiful gardens of the Paso Robles Inn.

The evening reached its climax when a young couple asked DAOU Vineyard winemaker, Daniel Daou, to sign their massive wine bottle. The couple, just recently engaged, plans to open it in honor of their future 10th wedding anniversary.

Surf’s Up with Avila Beach Surf School

Ever wanted to learn how to surf? Avila Beach Surf School is San Luis Obispo county’s premier surf school, offering surf lessons from Pismo Beach to Morro Bay. They have been teaching surf instruction for fifteen years and guarantee to make your experience one to remember. Avila Lighthouse Suites’ Surf’s Up package includes overnight accomodations, surf board rental, wetsuit rental, photos and a 1.5 hour surf lesson from Avila Beach Surf School. Make reservations here.

Still worried about learning how to surf? So was recent guest, Jillian K. Read about her first-hand experience below!

“We all had rocks in our stomachs.  It was the first time any of us would surf and our lesson was quickly approaching.  My four friends and I arrived at Avila Beach with a few minutes to spare, which was spent breathing deeply and feeling nauseous.  One friend had chosen not to participate in the group lesson, and so she was feeling calm and pleased with her decision.  After a few minutes we met Justin, the owner of Avila Beach Surf School and an active local voice in Avila Beach conservation.  He handed out wetsuits and introduced us to John, a UCSC student and our surf lesson instructor.  We squirmed into our wetsuits just as the sun peeked around the clouds—the time had come.  We made our way down to the beach and had a quick safety and technique lesson from John.  He reminded us of the dangers of a ride tide, but assured us that nine years of surfing experience meant he was a pretty strong swimmer.

Avila Beach Surf Lesson

“Both knees, front foot, stand up slowly.” This was all the technique we needed to know for us to surf that morning, and so we practiced this on the sand as John offered advice on our form.  After this quick introduction to surfing we got directly in the water, surf boards in hand.  John demonstrated the most pleasant way to jump over waves, which may have been the most significant skill I learned that day (it turns out that you don’t have to swallow a bunch of salt water every time a wave goes by…).  We all practiced jumping over waves and onto our boards while one person worked with John to ride in a wave and move both knees forward, put our front foot between our hands- at an angle- and then slowly stand up.  In the beginning we all ate a lot of salt water.

Luckily, our friend Maureen, who had opted out of the surf lesson, was our photographer and took some excellent wipe out photos.  Just as we were becoming acclimated to the feeling of the board we noticed that the waves were becoming massive—maybe twice the size of when we had started.  Just as I began to think, “this two-hour lesson might be the end…” Justin threw on his wet suit and came out to provide more instruction.  He assured us that these waves were, in fact, humungous, and provided some adept advice in maneuvering the waves.  With John and Justin in the water instructing us, “both knees, front foot, stand up slowly,” we all stood up on the board for at least a moment!  After a few rounds of waves we were all dragging our feet with exhaustion.  We requested to see the real pros ride some waves, and without hesitation, Justin and John ran out into the water and showed us how it’s done.  Their talent, humility, and positive attitudes left us all with a smile on our faces—even Maureen, who seemed to have just as much fun watching as we did in the water.  On the walk back I learned that Justin has experience instructing lessons for all sorts of folks, and he emphasized the ease with which people with disabilities learn how to surf, given their keen listening skills and ability to overcome fear!  Justin also knows a lot about local ecology and he includes lessons in geology and marine biology during the summer surf camp that Avila Beach Surf School offers.

This surf lesson was the highlight of our trip to the central coast of California.  Even if your trip includes people of varying ages, abilities, and interest level, a surf lesson from Avila Beach Surf School provides a safe opportunity to try a new sport and explore the natural environment in a new capacity!”
